Ready, Set … Goals!

I HATE New Year’s Resolutions! Know why? Because I’d make a resolution and I’d fail to reach my mark. It’s discouraging to fail year after year. As a result, I never make them anymore. Well, I’ve finally figured out the reason my resolutions would fail and it’s really so simple, I don’t know how I missed it all these years. The biggest failure of them all was my failure to set the goals to get me to my desired end result. After all, I can’t aim to become a concert pianist next year if I don’t schedule some lessons and practice time all year long, right? I probably can’t be a concert pianist in a year, but you get the point.

I don’t know about you, but I need milestones. I need steps along the way. They serve as markers to get me from point A to point B. Goal setting is all about strategy and making each goal reasonable and achievable.

This article is a great starting point. It outlines five reasons to set a goal in the first place. Check it out and start today! 5 Reasons to Set A Goal.

I also think we tend to set goals that can be too difficult to realistically attain. For example, becoming a concert pianist is almost impossible, but what about setting a goal like “learning how to play piano” or even “take some piano lessons”. These are still goals that if reached will make you a broader and more talented person, but they are also much more easily attainable, so you can feel good about accomplishing them and starting down the path toward the “big” goal at the end, or not. Either way you accomplished something beneficial.

On that note, I’m not sure what my resolution will be this year (yes, I still make them).
